Before you book
Please read this page to the end. It says how the academy works and what membership costs: we would rather you knew all of it before the first class than after. If you are booking for a teenager, read it together: everything below applies to them.
The trial class
The trial class is free of charge and not binding. Trial classes take place from to , on only, at our dojo at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB): . Building L is the one that houses the swimming pool and the Basic-Fit gym.
Classes are taught in English
All classes are taught in English. If English is not your strongest language, or your teenager's, do not let that stop you: our teaching is very visual, our instructors speak several languages, including French, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and Romanian, and on the mat you will very likely meet someone who speaks the same first language. Language has never been a barrier at Kaizen.
With and without the kimono
Kaizen teaches Brazilian jiu-jitsu with and without the kimono, and both are part of the training. We do not accept members who wish to train only no-gi.
We offer classes per week, some with the kimono (gi) and others without (no-gi). All classes are appropriate for beginners. For those starting out, we recommend two classes per week, increasing the frequency gradually as your fitness and familiarity with the practice grow, and kimono classes first: in the early stages, the kimono is a very effective tool for developing proper technique. are the ideal days: all professors are typically on the tatami.

To practise you need a kimono and a white belt. Members can buy the academy's kimono at , with our patch sewn on the back and a white belt included.
One academy
Jiu-jitsu is a path you walk with us, or elsewhere. We do not accept members who train at another academy at the same time.
Hygiene and safety
From the trial class on:
- Wear a rashguard or a crewneck t-shirt under the kimono.
- Keep your nails short, and remove all jewellery.
- Wear flip-flops whenever you are off the tatami.
- Do not train if you are sick or have a skin infection.
The full rules of the academy come with your membership.
About the booking
- Book in the name of the person who will attend the trial class, with their real contact details. If you are booking for a teenager, you also give your own details as their legal representative. Bookings with invented or incomplete details are not accepted.
- If the trial is for a teenager, their legal representative is very welcome to come and watch the class. It is not a requirement, but we appreciate it.
- You can move or cancel your booking up to hours before the class. Later than that, a cancellation counts as not showing up.
- If you do not show up without cancelling in time, you will not be able to book another trial class for months. After a second time, no further trial class can be booked.
- We send the confirmation by e-mail, with what to bring and when to arrive. Add to your contacts so that it does not end up in spam: our contact card does it in one tap.
